Mapping and Exhibiting Postcards from 1920s Peru

I digitized 223 postcards depicting Peru, Bolivia, and Chile, and generated item-level metadata for each postcard based on the MODS and Dublin Core metadata schemas. Using MapWarper, Google Maps, and ArcGIS, I georeferenced the items over a historical 1906 map of Peru. The project culminated into a selection of images centered on themes of flora, fauna, and the indigenous population to be accessed via Omeka for the Spring 2020 Art History undergraduate course, Art and Archaeology in Peru, to help students contextualize Chimu and Nazca ceramics from the Mesamerican Center’s Art & Art History Collection. I also organized a virtual exhibit for the Benson using a limited set of postcards focused on the theme of identity and the analysis of the postcards’ original textual descriptions.

DIRKS Personal Records Management System Project

DIRKS is based on and expands the best-practice approach outlined in Australian standard AS 4390-1996, Records Management and International Standard ISO 15489, Records Management and the accompanying technical report. My team used the DIRKS methodology to examine, document, and suggest improvements for a team member’s personal electronic record keeping system. Our goal was to develop products and tools to support good recordkeeping including 1) documented recordkeeping requirements, 2) a ‘functions source document’ for each function, 3) a business and records classification scheme, 4) a records disposal schedule, and 5) guidance on the development of appropriate policies and procedures to support personal records and information management. Credit is also due to my team members, Jana Zevnik and Nina Tarnawsky.

Arranging and Describing the Tom Spencer Papers

My team arranged and described Tom Spencer’s collection of personal papers and recordings using appropriate standards (DACS) with support from the Austin History Center staff. The deliverables for this project consisted of an Appraisal Report and Processing Plan (ARPP), a finalized finding aid, and an EAD finding aid. Tom Spencer is an avid gardener that hosts/produces the KLRU show Central Texas Gardener and produced other documentaries and public affairs programs at KLRU. The collection contains photographs, journals, correspondence, writings, certificates and video recordings documenting his many interests and community involvement in Austin, Texas from the 1980s through the present. Credit is also due to my team members, Katie Stacy and Patrick McLynch.
